The History Of Bosworth Hall Hotel & Spa
Bosworth Hall Hotel has a remarkable stamp on English history. This stately building, now a renowned Warwickshire hotel, has undergone a truly interesting evolution from its origins as a home for the highest in society to a thriving hotel.
Initially, Bosworth Hall was constructed not as a hotel, but as a private residence for the Dixie family. The estate was acquired by Wolstan Dixie, a prominent London Lord Mayor, in 1589. The grand house was built by Sir Beaumont Dixie, who became a Baronet in the mid-17th century, following the creation of the title by King Charles II. For nearly three centuries, the Hall remained in the hands of the Dixie family, serving as a symbol of their stature and wealth.
The transition of Bosworth Hall began in the late 19th century when Charles Tollemache-Scott, a deputy lieutenant, took over the property. His ownership saw significant renovations, many of which are still visible today, such as the distinctive marked guttering and unique cellar doors that replaced old gates. Despite these improvements, Tollemache-Scott’s ownership was short-lived. By 1913, the Hall was sold, and it changed hands several times before being acquired by Leicester City Council in 1931.
Bosworth Hall’s role shifted dramatically when it became a public hospital in 1936. During World War II, it served as an infirmary for injured soldiers and continued as a long-term care facility until 1957. The property fell into neglect when the hospital closed due to staffing shortages. The 1980’s brought new hope when Britannia Hotels undertook the challenge of converting the derelict building into a hotel. This transformation preserved the buildings historical charm while incorporating modern amenities, establishing it as a distinguished Warwickshire hotel.
In recent years, Bosworth Hall has embraced its historical legacy, including the addition of a Green Plaque in 2018 to honour Lady Florence Dixie. An accomplished writer and feminist, Lady Florence lived at the Hall in the late 1800’s. Her works, including the novel Gloriana envisioned a future of gender equality and societal progress, reflecting her forward-thinking ideas.
The estate grounds, originally landscaped by the Harcourt family after the Norman conquest, have also played a significant role in its history. The estate once hosted a unique herd of black deer, now extinct, and today is home to Reeves’ Muntjac Deer.
The grand Yew tree on the southern side of the Hall, estimated to be around 430 years old, adds to the estate’s historical charm.
Recent archaeological digs have uncovered artifacts from various periods, revealing the extensive history of the land long before Bosworth Hall’s construction. Findings include medieval pottery, Roman shards, and even Neolithic flint, hinting at the site’s continuous significance through the ages.
Bosworth Hall Hotel and Spa remains a testament to the rich tapestry of English history, seamlessly blending its celebrated past with modern hospitality.
