The History Of Royal Court Hotel & Spa
The Royal Court Hotel, nestled in the heart of Warwickshire, has a story steeped in rich history. Originally known as Kerseley Hall, this grand property was built in 1894 as a country manor for William Hillman, the influential founder of the Hillman Motor Company. Hillman, his wife Fanny, and their eight daughters lived in true style and luxury, with the house featuring seven grand bedrooms, two studies, two bathrooms all alongside extensive servants’ quarters. The grounds also offered outdoor tennis courts, a billiards room, a dining room, and a majestic main hall, set within a peaceful wooded area.
The manor’s architectural bedrooms made it an ideal residence for Hillman and his family, who enjoyed the seclusion and beauty of Warwickshire’s countryside. For nearly half a century, Kerseley Hall remained a private family estate until the passing of Fanny Hillman in 1927. With William Hillman having died years earlier, their children found themselves unable to maintain the grand property. As a result, the family home was sold later that year to the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital.
Under its new ownership, Kerseley Hall was transformed into the Alcock Convalescent Hospital in 1929. Originally designed to help those recovering from illness, the hospital then played a significant role during World War II. Following the devastating aerial bombings of Coventry during the Blitz, the hospital expanded its services to care for bombing casualties and other emergency cases. For several decades, the building served as a symbol of healing and resilience for the Coventry community.
In 1968, the property’s story shifted once again when local businessman Fred Kilpatrick purchased the manor. Kilpatrick saw the potential to restore the building’s grandeur and refurbished Kerseley Hall into a hotel, thus marking the beginning of its transformation into the Royal Court Hotel. Kilpatrick’s vision brought new life to the property, and the hotel quickly gained a great reputation as a welcoming destination for guests seeking comfort and elegance.
By the late 20th century, the hotel continued to flourish until its closure in 2008. Shortly thereafter, Britannia Hotels successfully purchased it, ushering in a new chapter in the building’s long and storied history. With extensive renovations and tasteful expansions, the Royal Court Hotel emerged as a modern country retreat, while still preserving its traditional charm.
Today, the Royal Court Hotel and Spa offers a unique blend of historic elegance and contemporary comfort. Spread across 11 acres of picturesque grounds, the hotel now features a range of en-suite bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness suite, and a spa complete with a sauna and steam room. Its original character has been carefully preserved, allowing guests to experience the timeless atmosphere of the 19th-century manor while also enjoying modern amenities.
