The History Of Adelphi Hotel

The Adelphi Hotel, a cornerstone of Liverpool’s hospitality scene, has a rich history that mirrors the city’s own evolution. The story of the Adelphi Hotel begins in 1826 with its original establishment by James Radley on Ranelagh Place, the site of Liverpool’s first public gardens. This initial venture was relatively modest and did not gain the building any significant attention until nearly fifty years later, when it was replaced by a grander version.

In 1876, the Adelphi underwent a major transformation, emerging as a luxurious establishment with over 300 rooms and a substantial staff. This renovation marked a movement away from its simpler start, aiming to offer an elevated level of comfort and elegance. The hotel quickly became renowned for its exceptional service and unique offerings, including a famous turtle soup prepared in heated tanks in the basement, which was not only served to guests but also distributed nationwide for special events. During this time, the Adelphi was considered Liverpool’s premier hotel, frequented by renowned figures such as Charles Dickens, who visited several times and praised its charm.

The hotel’s prominence caught the attention of another hotel chain in 1892, ultimately leading to a change in management. Under new ownership, the hotel was rebranded as the Midland Adelphi. However, by the early 20th century, the need for modernisation became apparent. In 1914, the hotel was rebuilt once again, this time featuring a design by Frank Atkinson and constructed by a leading Liverpool firm. The new Adelphi was considered state-of-the-art for its time, boasting a range of luxurious amenities including a heated indoor pool, tennis and squash courts, Turkish baths, and even shooting galleries. Each room was outfitted with a telephone, making it a pioneering facility in the UK.

During the early 20th century, the Adelphi became a notable centre for ocean liner travellers. Its reputation continued to grow, attracting a wide array of public figures including Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Harold Wilson. The Adelphi also weathered the Second World War relatively unscathed during the Liverpool May Blitz of 1941, a testament to its resilience.

The hotel’s guest list over the years has included a diverse collection of historical figures. In the 1940s, it hosted American cowboy Roy Rogers, who, while recovering from illness, was visited by his horse Trigger, who made an unusual but memorable appearance at the hotel. Additionally, the hotel also saw darker moments, such as the tragic death of Sir ‘Jock’ Delves Broughton in 1941, following his trial for a high-profile murder.

Towards the end of the 20th century, the Adelphi faced challenges but also saw significant changes. Acquired by Britannia Hotels in 1982, it underwent renovations to restore its former glory while incorporating modern updates. The Adelphi remains a Grade II listed building, reflecting its historical significance and architectural splendour.
