This initial venture was relatively modest and did not gain the building any significant attention until nearly fifty years later, when it was replaced by a grander version.

In 1876, the Adelphi underwent a major transformation, emerging as a luxurious establishment with over 300 rooms and a substantial staff. This renovation marked a movement away from its simpler start, aiming to offer an elevated level of comfort and elegance. The hotel quickly became renowned for its exceptional service and unique offerings, including a famous turtle soup prepared in heated tanks in the basement, which was not only served to guests but also distributed nationwide for special events. During this time, the Adelphi was considered Liverpool’s premier hotel, frequented by renowned figures such as Charles Dickens, who visited several times and praised its charm.

The hotel’s prominence caught the attention of another hotel chain in 1892, ultimately leading to a change in management. Under new ownership, the hotel was rebranded as the Midland Adelphi. However, by the early 20th century, the need for modernisation became apparent. In 1914, the hotel was rebuilt once again, this time featuring a design by Frank Atkinson and constructed by a leading Liverpool firm.
